Sewing Essentials Tutoring: Simplified Sewing
Goal: To remove your perplexities about the what’s and how’s of hand sewing and help you soar into a lifetime of creativity with an energizing clarity to create an endless variety of projects!
I am passionate about passing on what I have learned about sewing to learners of all ages! I will focus on teaching you sewing vocabulary and how to sew, so that when you are finished you can decide what to sew!
I know many of you want to start you sewing journey with machine sewing, but you need to “learn how to walk before you run.” Once you have mastered the skills of hand sewing you only need to learn how to operate a sewing machine, because you will have already learned the foundational vocabulary needed for sewing and have practiced the essential (and transferable) skills needed to complete most any sewing project.
Sewing Essentials: Simplified Sewing course will be offered in mid-March of 2026.
Check back here in January 2026 for more details about the schedule, costs, and how to register. Or feel free to contact me to express your interest and I’ll be happy to email you with the details as they become available!
The goal of Simplified Sewing classes is not to teach you everything there is to know about hand sewing. There’s always more to learn! My vision is to equip you with the foundational facts and essential skills so that you can go forth to confidently pursue any hand sewing project you set your mind to do!
When you complete Simplified Sewing, you will have mastered the foundations of hand sewing and will be able to then take off and creatively apply your knowledge and skills to make a wide variety of hand sewing (or machine sewing) projects.

What will we make?
Cardboard cut-outs? Fabric strips? Glue? Don’t let the humble nature of our starting projects fool you. The unassuming elements are intentional. They are intended to disarm any “I can’t do this” feelings you might have about the art of hand sewing. The simplicity of these beginning materials allows you to focus on the process itself, without the worry of sharp needles, thin thread, and floppy fabric. You will quickly advance to applying the same processes to produce projects that are both meaningful and useful.
All Sewing Essentials: Simplified Sewing classes are initially more focused on learning and mastering the process of hand sewing than they are what product you create along the way.
As you master each skill, you will quickly move forward into working with new tools and materials—including different kinds of cloth and types and sizes of needles.
